Coffee and cuppa

Thanks to all of you who have stopped by and enjoyed a hot drink or muffin this season. I have been able to put more than $180 into the funds of the Club, to directly benefit your children and their soccer experience.
Thanks, too, to those of who that have stepped in and looked after teas and coffees to allow me to step away and enjoy watching my boys play and take photos for the blog.

Coach Tim said, "Well done to my players on Saturday.
Another beautiful sunny morning to show off the skills you have practiced all season.
Last week I said 'sometimes getting the ball into the net takes something special.' Well Elkan, you sure proved that with two excellent goals - including the second which has to be GOAL OF THE SEASON!
Well done Edward, Leah and Layton as joint players of the day - recognition of lots of hard work in the sun.
A special mention to Alex - your hard work getting the ball down field was outstanding. The opposition coach was very impressed and wished you were on his team."

Layton finished as top scorer with 15.
Hamish scored 1.
Alex scored 8.
Elkan scored 4.
Leah scored 2.

Wte Warriors vs Pleasant Point Leopards

Played Saturday 20th August.

Played at Pleasant Point at 10am.

Wte Torpedoes vs Temuka Cougars 2-1

Played Saturday 20th August.

Played at Gunnion Square, Temuka at 10.30am.

Coach Rochelle said, "Because of the size pitch we had lots of little red faces again by the end. We did recruit a school friend Zayne to play as our extra so we could have a wee sub. He did really well and is very keen to play with us next year! Everybody put in a big effort..... the passing game that Dave got them doing at practice paid off, there was definitely more looking and thinking going on! A real tussle around the field with offence and defence, the ball was in our half the majority of the second half but we lost count of near misses at the goal, it was exciting to watch."

Player of the Day: Noah.

Wte Giants vs WE Beaconsfield Breakers 1-9

Played Saturday 20th August.

Played at West End, Timaru at 10.40am.

Parent Tim said, "All the Giants players worked hard on Saturday. Playing the first half in squishy mud, then the second in frozen mud made for an interesting contrast. I have noticed real improvement in passing accuracy and players off the ball looking for a space and calling for the ball. Just remember guys and gals, look to use the touchline to get down field. The Giants have a bye to finish the season."

Players of the day: Shaun and Brodie

Wte Thunder - bye

I have been very pleased with your improvement through the season. This is easy to see in these last few games where we are playing teams for a second time and really pushing them hard.
As with last week you all worked hard for the entire 40 minutes, but sometimes getting the ball into their net takes something special. Well done to Elkan and Hamish as joint players of the day, your courage and determination set the standard for everyone. Laney won the cleanest boots award!"

Wte Torpedoes vs Thistle Stars 2-2

Played Saturday 6th August.

Played at Russell Square, Timaru at 10.40am.

Coach Rochelle said, "When we left home it was raining cats and dogs, by the time we hit St Andrews it was just spitting and by the time we got to Timaru no rain but dark clouds. Sure enough after we had got on our gear, warmed up and headed to take the field it started raining very heavily (darn it followed us!) so like brave soldiers we played in the rain but it was very cold too, so the other team had 8 players so they all came on to play. Thanks to Rhys' cousin Brett who filled in as our 5th player!"

Player of the Day: Rhys.

Wte Warriors - bye

Wte Giants vs Temuka Wolverines 1-9

You worked really hard in the rain and mud, particularly without subs being available.
Congratulations to Hamish for a well taken goal, made possible by excellent work from the girls fighting for the ball in defence.
Well done to Laney and Angus as our joint players of the day, you both showed great courage and determination. Angus also won the cleanest boots award!"

Players of the day: Laney and Angus

Played on Saturday 30th July 2011
Played at Centennial School, Waimate at 10.00am

Player of the day: Brodie

Parent Tim said, "It was a real pleasure to cheer on the efforts of the Waimate Giants today. The seven players involved showed that they had improved heaps since the start of the season and are now really playing together as a team.
Sudarshan and Annah showed plenty of courage when tackling their opponents. Brodie was excellent at maintaining his wide position and taking the ball down the sideline. Max and Daniel did a great job at stopping most of Thistle's attacks and clearing the ball away from danger. It was particularly pleasing to see Captain Peter and Hannah using the skills they practiced at the Holiday Programme. Some great goals were scored and everyone kept running and chasing the ball right through until full-time. Keep up the good work Doug. The smiles and positive attitude of your players does you credit."

ASB Holiday Fun Football

Sessions were held for 7-11 year olds at Sir Basil Arthur Park on July 18th and 19th. Four of our club's players went along - Hannah Soper, Laney Stanistreet, Peter Fish and Jonathan Fish.
Altogether there were about 30 children there, and with great coaches they tried out their skills, learnt some new ones, and had a lot of fun on the way.

Hannah said, "I had a really great time at the soccer holiday programme on Monday and Tuesday. I made some new friends and learned lots of new skills. One of my favourite games was one called penalty shoot out. It was cold in the morning but when you started to get going you warmed up a bit. It was good to see some players from our soccer club come and join in too!"

Laney said, "We learned lots of new tricks. We had a go at scoring and some other stuff.
I really enjoyed it."

Jonathan said, "I had a lot of fun today. My favourite bit was the 4-goal game."

Peter said, "I'm really glad I did the football session. It was great because we played lots of new soccer games. My favourite bit was getting muddier than I've ever been before!"
